Michigan alum Dave Portnoy celebrates Michigan's national championship
Dave Portnoy, a Wolverine alumni, has been one of Michigan’s most die-hard fans during their run this season. Now, after claiming a national championship on Monday to end a 15-0 year, he celebrated accordingly inside NRG Stadium.
Portnoy, the owner of Barstool Sports, was in attendance in Houston for the 34-13 victory for No. 1 Michigan over No. 2 Washington in the College Football Playoff. Following the sealing, 81-yard interception from DB Mike Sainristil, Portnoy had a video of him and his section celebrating the win.
“It’s over!” yelled Portnoy.
“I’ve had Super Bowls, World Series. I’ve got my college football – I’ve got my Infinity Stones!” Portnoy continued. “Michigan? The most wins in the history college football! Nobody has more! Everybody is like when’s the last time you won anything? We’re now the national champs! The winged helmet is the symbol for college football – now, forever. The last year of this format? Nobody is better than Michigan – nobody!”
Again, few fans of the maize & blue have been as devoted as Portnoy throughout this season. He, regardless of any controversy, supported the program and did so until the very end of their 15-0 campaign.
That included an appearance at the Rose Bowl for their win over Alabama as well as their title-winning, 21-point victory over the Huskies.
Portnoy has seen several championships for several of his teams over the years as he recalled. Still, as a Michigan man, few, if any, likely feel as good as the achievement that the Wolverines accomplished for the 10th time in program history last night.

Kirk Herbstreit congratulates Michigan on winning national championship
Kirk Herbstreit was front and center for the first national title for Michigan in over a quarter of a century. Now, following the game and broadcast, he has shared his message for the Wolverines after winning it all.
Herbstreit sent out a tweet for No. 1 Michigan following their first national championship since 1997. He congratulated them on the accomplishment while also crediting them for being as locked in as they were during the course of their year, including when it came to their playoff appearance.
“Congratulations to @UMichFootball for winning the national championship!” wrote Herbstreit. “The team has been focused on this night for an entire year. Player led teams are the most dangerous teams. Congratulations.”
Herbstreit got to see and call the Wolverines’ crowing moment for himself alongside Chris Fowler. In the aftermath of the victory, he is one of the many who cover the sport that have offered Michigan his own congratulations on the title.
