Michigan has fired co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss, the University announced Friday.

It had been announced earlier in the week that Weiss had been placed on administrative leave amid a criminal investigation.

“After a review of University policies, the athletic department has terminated the appointment of co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss,” Wolverines athletic director Warde Manuel said Friday in a statement.

Weiss released a statement minutes after the decision was announced on Twitter.

“I am proud of the success we achieved over the last two seasons and grateful to all of the Michigan players, coaches, and staff. The potential of Team 144 knows no bounds,” Weiss said in a statement. “I have nothing but respect for the University of Michigan and the people who make it such a great place. I look forward to putting this matter behind me and returning my focus to the game that I love.”

The University of Michigan police called the reported incidents, which took place December 21-23, “computer access crimes.”

“The University of Michigan Police Department is investigating a report of computer access crimes that occurred at Schembechler Hall during December 21-23, 2022,” University of Michigan Deputy Chief of Police Crystal James said in a statement to ESPN earlier in the week. “Since this is an ongoing investigation there is no additional information to share.”

Weiss, 39, just completed his second season with the Wolverines coaching staff. He was the quarterbacks coach during the 2021 season before adding the additional title of co-offensive coordinator last offseason.

The Wolverines made the College Football Playoff in both of his seasons on staff, losing in the semifinals both years.

Weiss came to Michigan after more than a decade working with Jim Harbaugh’s brother, John, in Baltimore. With the Ravens, Weiss worked his way up to being an assistant coach.
