There have been rumors about Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh potentially leaving for the NFL for months. After leading the Wolverines to the national championship on Monday, it sounds as if we could be nearing a decision on Harbaugh’s future.

According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Harbaugh is set to meet with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The two report that the meeting is set to take place next week and that Harbaugh “has indicated to associates there’s a real possibility he could leave the University of Michigan to become Los Angeles’ head coach.”

Rapoport and Pelissero added that the Las Vegas Raiders could also have interest in Harbaugh. However, Adam Schefter reported Saturday morning that interim coach Antonio Pierce is the favorite to land the Raiders job.

While Jim Harbaugh going to the NFL continues to seem like a real possibility, Michigan isn’t giving up without a fight.

According to the report from Rapoport and Pelissero, Michigan is continuing to negotiate with Harbaugh and trying to work out a deal that would keep him in Ann Arbor. It sounds as if we will know soon if the Wolverines are indeed able to do that.

Jim Harbaugh played at Michigan and has been the head coach of the Wolverines since 2015. Prior to that, he spent four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and was successful, taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

“It was such a great feeling last night celebrating and really cool to wake up this morning and it wasn’t a dream,” Harbaugh said. “That was real and it felt almost just as good as last night. We want to take a happy flight back to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

“The guys want a parade. So, gosh darn it, let’s give them a parade. I’m looking forward to that too. Then we’ll see what happens. No man knows the future. Nobody can predict that. That’s biblical, and right now feels pretty darn good.”

Even though Harbaugh wouldn’t speculate about his future, others have been. On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter claimed conversations between Harbaugh and NFL organizations could begin as soon as the national championship concluded.

“I expect that there are going to be NFL teams that want to talk with Jim Harbaugh and I think we start with the Chargers,” Schefter said Monday on Get Up. “The Chargers know Jim Harbaugh for the time that he played quarterback there. They need somebody that can come in and change the culture, build a program and work with Justin Herbert. And I think Jim Harbaugh will be on the Chargers radar after this game.”
