In a first this college football season, a field was stormed by fans of the visiting team after a win. To celebrate the Michigan football’s 1000th win at Maryland on Saturday, Wolverine faithful ran onto the field to join the team.

Video of the scene from Yahoo SportsRoss Dellenger shows dozens of maize and blue clad fans hustling from the fringes of the field to the Michigan players and coaches. The public address announcer could be heard pleading with fans to end their incursion onto the field.

“We must have all fans off the field at this time, thank you. All fans off the field at this time. All fans off the field. Thank you,” the announcer said, with little heed given to his words.

Michigan survived a scare from the Terrapins, escaping with a 31-24 win after the Wolverines defense came to life late and stomped out a chance at a Maryland comeback.

It sets up a massive game against likely undefeateds next week when Michigan hosts bitter rival Ohio State — the Buckeyes kicked off against Minnesota shortly after Michigan won.

But first, some Michigan fans on hand for the 1000th win in program history, the most in college football history, wanted to celebrate with the players on the field where they got it done — surely to the chagrin of plenty of Maryland faithful.

Eventually, the Michigan fans were corralled by stadium security and event staff before being led back to the stands and out of the stadium.

Interim head coach Sherrone Moore reflected on the historic win

While it took a little bit of work as Maryland battled back in the second half, acting head coach Sherrone Moore — again in place of Jim Harbaugh — had no doubt his team would pull it off.

As he did last week against Penn State, Moore gave Harbaugh a shoutout with the bit of history.

“That’s just this team,” Moore told FOX’s Jenny Taft after the game. “Grit, grind, do whatever it takes to win mentality. Win 1,000, historic. Coach, that was for you, man. Just excited for this team and to be a part of this great fan base, this university.

“I promised my mom there’s no swearing this time, so just excited for the players.”

Blake Corum scored two touchdowns to lead the charge on offense, but the defense and special teams stole the show. Mike Sainristil had two interceptions on the day and Derrick Moore had a scoop-and-score to stymy the Maryland offense. On special teams, a blocked punt turned into a safety to set up Corum’s second touchdown of the day.

Sainristil, a converted wide receiver, said the plan was simple. Michigan had a mission in all three phases, and the Wolverines stuck to it as they avoided getting too far ahead of themselves with a massive rivalry game looming next week.

“We just wanted to make sure that we just sent a message out all across the board. Offense, defense, special teams,” Sainristil said. “We were never looking too far ahead. We were just focused on Maryland.”
