Michigan-Hawaii game delayed due to inclement weather

Michigan’s game against Hawaii — originally scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff in The Big House — has been delayed due to lightning and inclement weather. A new kickoff time has yet to be announced.

The announcement came from Michigan athletics about 30 minutes before the scheduled kickoff. Gates will remain closed to fans and be reopened between 30 minutes and an hour before the yet-to-be-announced new kickoff time.

Weather that had been threatening to disrupt proceedings and delayed fans getting into the stadium now waylaid the game.

With lightning detected around Michigan Stadium and Ann Arbor, the gates to the stadium were closed for 30 minutes just before 7 p.m. Fans are advised to go to the Crisler Center or ITC for shelter.

The contest against Hawaii — one of, if not the worst FBS team this season — is set to be the second of three acts in the ongoing quarterback drama for Michigan. Cade McNamara got the start in Week 1 against Colorado State and J.J. McCarthy is slated to be the starter against Hawaii. A strong performance against the Rainbow Warriors could seal the starting gig in McCarthy’s favor ahead of a Week 3 game against UConn.

The Wolverines are heavy favorites against Hawaii, expected to win by upwards of 50 points according to any number of betting lines.

For right now, the weather is playing the best defense Hawai’i could hope for.

Fans were advised prior to the game to seek shelter from lightning

Michigan Athletics released a statement on their Twitter page at 6:49 PM EST saying, “Lightning has been detected within 10 miles. Spectators already in the stadium, please clear the field/seating bowl. Entry gates will be closed for a minimum of 30 minutes. Seek shelter under the concourse. Shelter locations include the ITC and Crisler Center.”
