Michigan has hired Shemy Schembechler, the son of Wolverines coaching legend Bo Schembechler, to be the program’s new assistant director of recruiting.

“I’m beyond honored to return home to (Michigan Football)!” Schembechler tweeted. “#GoBlue always and forever!”

Schembechler has been a scout for multiple NFL teams, including most recently working for the Las Vegas Raiders. He was with the Raiders from 2019 until earlier this year.

He has also previously worked for the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs.

His longest tenure with a team was with Washington from 2000-2012.

Schembechler was also the president of GES Advisory Company, a service for high schoolers to give them feedback about their potential at the next level. However, according to LinkedIn, he has left the job as of this month. The reason is most likely because of his new gig in Ann Arbor.

He went to Miami (Ohio), his father’s alma mater and where he got his first head coaching job from 1988-1992 where he was a football equipment staffer for four years. He then spent some time as an assistant recruiting coordinator for the Wolverines football team in the 1990s.

Bo Schembechler is a complicated Michigan legend

Bo Schembechler is one of the winningest coaches in Michigan history with a 194–48–5 record over two decades. He never had a losing season and won 13 Big Ten titles. Michigan played in ten Rose Bowls during his tenure, although they only won two of the them.

Current Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh played for Schembechler and the Wolverines from 1982-1986. During his senior year, Harbaugh earned All-Big Ten first team honors as he led Michigan to the Rose Bowl and a conference championship.

However, Schembechler’s legacy has become more complicated in recent years as many student athletes have recently come forward to say they were sexually abused by university doctor Robert Anderson.

That includes Bo’s adopted son Matt Schembechler, who told ESPN in 2021 that he was molested by Anderson in the 1960s and that his father knew of the allegations but didn’t do anything about it. Other players have also claimed to have told Schembechler about Anderson’s behavior.

Shemy Schembecher has defended his father, saying Matt’s story is not true and this his father did not know what Anderson was doing.
