Michigan lands transfer commitment from UNLV defensive back Ricky Johnson

Michigan has landed a new piece for its defensive backfield, as former UNLV DB Ricky Johnson has committed to the Wolverines, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Nakos tweeted out news of Johnson’s pledge on Saturday morning, writing the following report: “UNLV cornerback Ricky Johnson has committed to Michigan. He’s tallied 78 career total tackles, four tackles for loss and four interceptions. @PeteThamel first.”

Johnson had originally committed to Washington State in late April after entering the portal. However, he re-negged on that choice and has ultimately decided to flip to the reigning national title winners. That would be a tough opportunity to turn down for any player.

Before his time in college, Johnson played at Cy Falls High School in Houston, Texas, where he was a three-star recruit in the 2020 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also rated the No. 1,770 overall prospect, the No. 134 safety and the No. 238 player from the state of Texas for his cycle.

Other recent transfer additions for Michigan

Former Tennessee safety and Louisville transfer Wesley Walker committed to Michigan. He entered the transfer portal April 23 after initially committing to the Cardinals earlier this offseason.

Walker went through spring practice at Louisville after transferring from Tennessee, but re-entered the portal afterward. He appeared in 23 games with the Vols, including 12 starts, as he recorded 89 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and an interception in his two seasons in Knoxville.

Walker played high school football at Ensworth High School (Tenn.), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 505 overall recruit and the No. 46 safety in the 2019 cycle according to On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Wesley Walker is the latest transfer addition for Sherrone Moore and Michigan. The Wolverines also picked up a commitment from former FCS All-American Aamir Hall on Thursday following an impressive season at Albany.

This past season, Hall totaled five interceptions and 15 pass deflections. He started his college career at Richmond, where he spent three seasons at Richmond before transferring to Albany.

All told, Michigan is preparing to bring in at least six new faces from the portal after Johnson’s addition as the Wolverines look to build off last season’s run to 15-0 record and a national championship – the program’s first since 1997.
