The Michigan offense performs in pairs. Last year, they had two quarterbacks. Finally, that issue was resolved. However, the Wolverines still lean on two different guys to help call plays on offense. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss and offensive line/co-offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore share play-calling duties in Ann Arbor.

Now, a co-play-calling situation that doesn’t even involve the head coach sounds pretty strange, and it is very unique, by college football standards. But according to Weiss, it’s working out just fine. Evidenced by Michigan’s 4-0 start which featured a few offensive explosions.

When asked again about the dual-play-calling strategy, Weiss has nothing but positives to share about Moore and the operation they’re running, even though it may be unconventional.

“Yeah, so I mean, Sherrone is a really smart guy and knows football, you know. Playing experience, has done it, has experience. You know, every week, starting the game, he knows what he’s talking about. So I guess I think a lot of times, when some people see something new or hear something new, their first reaction is to say ‘you know, I’m not used to that, so that can’t be a good way to do it.'”

Weiss did admit, though, that the two still need to iron out some kinks. Given the gaudy numbers the unit is already putting up, Matt Weiss is excited to see what higher potential may lie ahead — especially with the talent the Wolverines possess at quarterback.

“You know, I think it is a work in progress, just like everything in our offense. Whether it’s the run game, the pass game, the play-calling, everything can be better. Everything is a work in progress and, you know, if we were out of rhythm or whatever he said, then yeah, I can’t wait to see what we look like when we’re in rhythm. And we all know we can get a lot better. But I think the system that we have in place is really good, you know. I know that Sherrone helps me a ton, I think I help him a ton. And it’s really it’s really a great way to do it and I think we have a great rhythm.”

That rhythm should only strengthen as the season progresses.
