Michigan outlasts Rutgers in key Big Ten Wrestling dual
The Michigan Wolverines started fast and won key toss up bouts in a 23-10 win over Rutgers in a Sunday afternoon Big Ten dual.
The Wolverines pulled an upset at 141 pounds and did not let up from there. Michigan never let the Scarlet Knights get back in the dual completely as Rutgers lost its first dual of the year within the conference.
Here’s how the dual went down between Michigan and Rutgers.
125: No. 5 Michael DeAugustino (UM) dec. 2-1 over No. 13 Dean Peterson (RU). UM leads 3-0
In the first period, Peterson and DeAugustino went back and forth and traded some scrambles. However, neither man found the scoreboard. Peterson started the second period down. That’s where the Michigan man found his groove on top, throwing in double boots and accumulating riding time.
During the second period, both wrestlers were assessed stall calls but DeAugustino rode out the two minutes. Then he chose down to start the third. Peterson elected to cut him loose and trailed 1-0. The Scarlet Knight did his best to get the offense going, but DeAugustino’s defensive wrestling kept him in front. Peterson was awarded a point after another stall call on Michigan’s lightweight, but DeAugustino earned a 2-1 win via riding time.
133: No. 6 Dylan Ragusin (UM) dec. 8-5 over No. 8 Dylan Shawver (RU). UM leads 6-0
Shawver shot first but Ragusin countered but there was no control for a takedown over the first minute-plus. Later in the period, Shawver managed to win a scramble and took a 3-0 lead before Ragusin earned an escape.
Ragusin started the second period down and earned the escape to cut the lead 3-2. Ragusin forced the issue on the feet though, and forced Shawver’s second stall call of the period, tying the match 3-3. In the third, Shawver went down to begin the final two minutes. After getting an escape, Ragusin retook the lead 6-4 with a takedown. Shawver was hit with his third caution, giving a point to Ragusin and the Michigan man took a 7-4 lead with 1:36 left. With Shawver trying to force a scramble, Ragusin was hit with a stall warning. With short time, Ragusin was hit once again, making it 7-5. Ragusin held on for the win, added riding time and gave Michigan a 6-0 lead.
141: No. 25 Sergio Lemley (UM) dec. 10-7 SV over No. 11 Mitch Moore (RU). UM leads 9-0
The first period was full of tie ups and head to head positions as Moore tried to force his way to a front headlock position. Moore, with less than 10 seconds to go in the first, worked his way to the back and earned a takedown for a 3-0 lead.
Lemley was on top to start the second period and held a nice ride for the first 30 seconds. Moore was able to rotate his hips and earn the escape, but Lemley immediately got back in a takedown to cut Moore’s lead 4-3. Rutgers coach Scott Goodale threw the challenge brick in a rare situation where he thought his wrestler did not escape and earn a point. However, after review, the call stood. Moore earned one more escape to take a 5-3 lead going into the third period. Lemley opened the third period with a reversal to tie the match and then Moore reversed him for a 7-5 lead. Lemley got out and earned a late takedown and took a 9-7 lead. During the two’s scramble, another challenge brick came out of the Rutgers’ corner. After review, there was no takedown for Lemley and Moore had his lead restored at 7-6.
However, Lemley had riding time as they restarted in neutral. With the riding time, the two went to sudden victory. During a scramble, Moore’s back was exposed and the officials called danger with a three count, giving Lemley the takedown and the win. However, the officials went to review. The call was overturned and it was back to a tie match. Lemley kept fighting and eventually got the takedown with five seconds left to win 10-7 in overtime.
149: Michael Cetta (RU) dec. 10-4 over Fidel Mayora (UM). UM leads 9-3
After a headlock attempt from Mayora, Cetta rolled through and earned the takedown. He would let up an escape and led 3-1 in the first period. Mayora went for another headlock and got the takedown for a 4-3 lead but Cetta managed to hit a reversal, taking a 5-4 lead with less than a minute to go in the first.
After a wild first period, Mayora was down in the second period as Cetta worked his ride. He managed to ride out the period and then got an escape to start the third, taking a 6-4 lead. The two battled on the feet until Mayora shot in but Cetta won the scramble to take a 9-4 lead late, giving Rutgers a win.
157: No. 9 Will Lewan (UM) MD 10-2 over Al DeSantis (RU). UM leads 13-3
The first period was on the feet for three minutes as Lewan and DeSantis were in tie ups and the hand fight quite a bit, neither really getting to their offense. Lewan managed to finally get a takedown with three seconds left and took a 3-0 lead going to the second.
DeSantis earned an escape in the second period to cut the lead 3-1. Going to the third period, Lewan went on bottom and got the escape to take a 4-1 lead. Lewan kept his foot on the gas and got a takedown to take a 7-1 lead before a DeSantis escape, making it 7-2. Then right at the buzzer, Lewan got one more takedown to win 10-2 and get the major decision.
165: No. 7 Cameron Amine (UM) dec. 4-1 SV over Luke Gayer (RU). UM leads 16-3
After a slow start, Amine shot and then Gayer forced a scramble. Eventually, it was a stalemate and the two reset in the center. The first period ended scoreless. In the second, Amine was down but earned a quick escape and a 1-0 lead. It was more of the same in the second, as Amine led by a point.
Gayer would escape to start the third period to tie the match. Amine then nearly got a takedown but Gayer gramby rolled and got out of a rear body lock. Amine then nearly hit a headlock throw going out of bounds. Neither man could score and it went to sudden victory. As the two went back and forth, there was a stalemate with one minute to go. Then Amine got in on a shot and elevated the single leg. Eventually, he drove through for the winning takedown.
174: No. 19 Jackson Turley (RU) dec. 5-0 over Joseph Walker (UM). UM leads 16-6
Turley sensed the team score and tried to jack up Walker for some throws but no points were scored by either man throughout the first three minutes. In the second period, Turley rode out Walker but did not score any near fall points, despite some close calls with tilts. It was scoreless going to the third period.
Turley started on the bottom and escaped to take a 1-0 lead. Then, he got in on his leg attack and finished a takedown for a 4-0 lead. Turley was hit with two cautions on top before the restart. Then, he tried on more tilts during his ride on top, throwing in both boots. He ended up top and earned the riding time point.
184: No. 15 Jaden Bullock (UM) MD 13-3 over No. 20 Brian Soldano (RU). UM leads 20-6
Bullock got in deep on a double leg, elevated Soldano and eventually brought him down for a 3-0 lead. Soldano would get the escape point to cut it 3-1. Bullock then got another takedown and Soldano earned an escape as he tried his patented turn off his back, making it 6-2. The first period came to a close on the feet.
After Soldano started his ride and looked for tilts, Bullock earned the escape and a 7-2 lead. The score remained intact going to the third where Soldano started on bottom. Bullock took advantage of a roll through and got two near fall points to take a 9-2 lead. Soldano earned an escape but Bullock was right back in on the attack to take a 12-3 lead. Michigan locked up the dual with the win.
197: No. 9 John Poznanski (RU) MD 11-3 Rylan Rogers (UM). UM leads 20-10
Poznanski earned the first takedown of the match to take a 3-0 lead before electing to let Rogers loose and made it 3-1. The Scarlet Knight went right back in on the attack and took a 6-1 lead. Poznanski would go on bottom in the second period and got the escape for a 7-1 lead.
After some hand fighting, Rogers had to fend off another Poznanski takedown attempt late in the period. Going to the third period, Poznanski held a six point lead as Rogers took down in the third. Following an escape, Poznanski extended his lead with another takedown, before another Rogers escape, making it 10-3. Poznanski hung on for the win to get Rutgers back on the board with a major decision, adding riding time.
285: No. 4 Lucas Davison (UM) dec 4-0 over No. 7 Yaraslau Slavikouski (RU). UM wins 23-10
It was a lot of hand fighting in the first two minutes but Davison eventually got through for a takedown and a 3-0 lead. He ended the first on top. Davison also opened the second period with an escape to take a 4-0 lead. With Davison pushing the pace, he forced a stall call on Slavikouski.
Slavikouski chose neutral for the third period, trailing 4-0. With Davison stout defensively, he hung on for the win and finished the dual on top.
With that, Rutgers failed to knock off one of the “Big Five” in the Big Ten Conference while the Wolverines showcased their depth with starters Austin Gomez and Shane Griffith.
