Michigan's Sam Walters enters the NCAA Transfer Portal

Sam Walters transferred to Michigan last year after one spent at Alabama. Now, he’ll be on his third program in three seasons with his decision today.
Walters has again entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. That comes per On3’s Pete Nakos on Monday afternoon.
Walters was with the Wolverines for his sophomore season after being with the Crimson Tide as a freshman. In that time, Walters, in 60 collegiate appearances, has averaged 5.2 points (42.6% FG, 38.2% 3PT) and 2.1 rebounds.
During his 23 games this season with the Wolverines, Walters posted 5.0 points (42.5% FG, 36.6% 3PT) and 1.6 rebounds. However, Walter missed the final fourteen games over the last month and a half of their year with a back injury.
Now, Walters is the third entry into the portal during this cycle from the maize & blue. Both are sons of former notable professional players in Justin Pippen and Jace Howard. In turn, the Wolverines have now added their first transfer, around the same time as this entry, with North Carolina’s Elliot Cadeau (No. 34 overall, No. 7 PG currently per On3).

Walters, a native of The Villages, Florida, played high school basketball at Villages Charter School. He was the No. 68 overall recruit there as a four-star prospect in the 2023 cycle. He also rated as the No. 10 PF in the class and the No. 6 player from the state. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. With that, Walters was the second highest-rated signee out of a four-man class in the Top-15 for ‘Bama in ’23.
Walters is a proven stretch-four through a pair of seasons for power conference teams in the SEC and Big Ten. That’ll be valuable for whichever programs have interest in him now that he’s in the transfer portal again in consecutive offseasons.
