Michigan Wolverines expected to hire SEC defensive coordinator
According to Matt Zenitz of On3, the Michigan Wolverines are expected to hire Jesse Minter as their defensive coordinator. Pete Thamel of ESPN was the first to report. Minter is currently the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Vanderbilt.
Before getting hired at Vanderbilt by head coach Clark Lea, Minter worked with the Baltimore Ravens for four seasons, ranging from analyst to defensive backs coach. He made his way back into the college game this season, last being the defensive coordinator of Georgia State during the 2016 season.
This completes another crossover between the two Harbaugh brothers. Defensive coordinator Mac Macdonald left the Michigan program to take the same role with the Ravens in late January. Now, Jim dips into Jon’s former staff once again for a replacement.
Minter got his start as a coach during the 2006 season with head coach Charlie Weis. He served as a defensive intern for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for one year. In 2007, Brian Kelly hired Minter as a graduate assistant at Cincinnati.
Indiana State gave Minter his first opportunity as a position coach, hiring him as the linebackers coach in 2009. He was promoted to defensive coordinator just two years later.

Now, Minter will be inheriting a Michigan defense that was one of the bests in the Big Ten. Replacing edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo will be a tough task but plenty of talent will be returning to Ann Arbor for the 2022 season.
JJ McCarthy talks future with Michigan Wolverines
JJ McCarthy, who served as Michigan’s backup this past year, told the Detroit Free Press he’s not planning on going anywhere. He was a highly touted recruit out of high school, coming in as the No. 13 recruit in the state of Florida, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Given Harbaugh’s NFL flirtations and Gattis’ departure, questions have arisen about what’s next for McCarthy. He told the Detroit Free Press’ Angelique Changelis about that.
“I’m a Wolverine and will be for the entirety of my college career,” McCarthy said. “I came here to find out what being a Michigan Man is all about, and after one year I know it’s the best place for my development as a scholar, football player, and most importantly as a human being.”
There’s your answer — and he left no room for doubt.
