Mitch Voit explains walk-off at-bat vs. Iowa in Big Ten Baseball Tournament

No. 4 seed Michigan defeated No. 5 seed Iowa 3-2 in 10 innings during Wednesday afternoon’s opening round of Big Ten Tournament action.

Heading into the bottom of the 10th inning tied at two runs, Hawkeyes pitcher Jack Young would allow a lead-off single to Jonathan Kim and proceeded to walk the next two batters to load the bases. With no outs, Michigan’s Mitch Voit stepped up to the plate, worked a full count and secured the walk-off walk for the Wolverines.

It was the first walk-off during a Big Ten Tournament game since 2019.

“It was close,” Voit said about the final ball’s placement in the strike zone. “But you know, all the work that we put in with coaches and everything, we had enough mindfulness to recognize that’s gonna be a ball and that I’ve gotta take that one.”

Voit finished the game 2-3 at the plate while also drawing two walks. He started his strong day at the plate by singling through the right side in the second inning and laid in another base hit in the eighth.

Overall, the Wolverines bats collected six hits and walked five times during 32 total appearances at the bag. Three of those five walks came in the 10th, which ended up being the difference in the game.

Now the Wolverines advance to face No. 8 seed Penn State on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will air live on the Big Ten Network.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a shocking upset of 1-seed Illinois. Taking a 3-0 lead in the early phases of the game and never relinquishing it, they pulled off a big-time upset to begin the day. On the back of strong starting pitching and an offense that didn’t stop hitting all game long, Penn State secured the 8-4 win to open play on Wednesday.

The Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions faced off during one series in the regular season. Iowa defeated Penn State two games to one in late March. They scored 20 total runs across those two wins and saw their lone loss coming 4-3 during the opener.

Big Ten Tournament action continues on Wednesday night as No. 6 seed Purdue and No. 2 seed Nebraska battle in consolation rounds. The first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. CT and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
