The Michigan defense received some awful news Monday as one of its best players in the secondary was confirmed to have suffered a serious injury. According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Wolverines safety Rod Moore went down with a torn ACL in spring practice on Sunday.

Moore was set to enter his fourth season at Michigan and was a starter each of the past three seasons. He earned first team All-Big Ten honors this past season to finish with 38 tackles, two interceptions and three passes defended.

It’s a big blow for a Wolverines team that is coming off of a national championship in 2023. The defense played a major part in that as Michigan ranked No. 1 in both total defense and scoring defense. The secondary allowed just 157 passing yards per game to rank second in the country and recorded 18 total interceptions.

The Wolverines already lost cornerback Mike Sainristil (six INTs) and safety Keon Sabb, and the injury to Moore takes away another experienced player. Cornerback Will Johnson (four INTs) will aim to step up as the leader for the secondary as a whole, but the safety position now has a lot of questions heading into next year.

Michigan will now have to rely on others such as Makari Page and Zeke Berry to step up in light of the injury to Rod Moore. It’s unclear at this point when his timetable to return could be, but recovery from a torn ACL is typically between 6-9 months.

Michigan DL coach Greg Scruggs resigns after recent OWI

Michigan defensive line coach Greg Scruggs has resigned following a recent arrest for OWI, head coach Sherrone Moore revealed on Thursday morning.

According to Chris Vannini of The Athletic, Moore had the following to say on the matter:

“I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately. I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.”

The arrest occurred on Saturday in the early morning hours.

“I can confirm he was arrested for OWI by our department just before 3 a.m.,” Chris Page, strategic communications manager for the Ann Arbor Police Department, sent in a text to The Detroit News Saturday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, an Ann Arbor police report notes that Scruggs was stopped around 2:15 a.m. at an intersection with his hazard lights on. He went through field sobriety tests and performed two breath tests, registering blood-alcohol levels of .16 and .17, well above the legal limit.
