Report: Michigan wide receiver transfer Karmello English expected to commit to West Georgia

Several months back, Michigan wide receiver Karmello English announced his intention to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Now, he has seemingly found a new home.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, the former Wolverine is now likely headed to play at West Georgia. Here was his tweet Thursday with that news:

“The current expectation is that ex-Michigan wide receiver Karmello English is going to transfer to West Georgia, a source tells 247sports. The Alabama native was a Class of 2023 top-200 overall recruit. Had a TD catch for Michigan vs. Indiana last year.”

A four-star recruit, English chose the Maize and Blue on signing day in Dec. 2022. The Phenix City (Ala.) Central product was rated as the No. 203 overall recruit in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He checked in as the No. 28 wide receiver in the nation and the 16th-best overall player in Alabama.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder played in six games for Michigan during his freshman campaign in 2023 — in case you forgot, the year the team finished 15-0 and won the national championship. English caught 1 pass, a 4-yard touchdown from the arm of quarterback Jack Tuttle in a 52-7 win over Indiana Oct. 14.

English gave comments when first announcing his departure appreciating his time in Ann Arbor:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Wolverine! I would like to thank Coach Harbaugh, Coach Moore, & Coach Bellamy for believing in my ability to play at UM. More notably, I appreciate my teammates, Michigan fans and support staff!” said English in his Instagram story.

English may also have a hint at his new school in his Instagram bio. He tagged an account, @UWG, which would appear to mean the University of West Georgia, right? The only issue is the username tag leads to an account with the name “IBRAHIM MOHAMAD.” That account has 79.2 thousand followers, just one total post and is also private, including some Arabic lettering in the bio section.

Does English have any connection to Mr. Mohamad? Doesn’t seem entirely likely, but rather, that he was trying to tag the University of West Georgia. If the Zenitz report is accurate, the latter would be the far more likely story, and perhaps confirms what Zenitz has reported.

If so, following a year where he was hardly used at Michigan, Karmello English ought to receive plenty of spotlight at his (potential) new stop.
