On Friday, Michigan named former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore its next head coach. Less than an hour later, Associated Press reporter Ralph D. Russo provided details on Moore’s five-year contract.

In his first season at the helm, Moore will earn $5.5 million. Every subsequent year, Moore’s base salary and additional compensation will increase by 2%. He also will receive a $500,000 bonus every time he remains Michigan’s head coach for the full contractual year.

Moore will receive a $250,000 incentive for reaching the conference championship. If Michigan wins the conference championship, he will receive an additional $500,000. Further, Moore will receive a $200,000 bonus every time Michigan reaches the first round of the College Football Playoff, byes included. If Michigan reaches the quarterfinals of the CFP, Moore will rake in another $300,000.

Before his promotion, Moore was set to earn $1.2 million in the 2024 campaign. For reference, newly-hired Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith is expected to earn $6 million this year.

Sherrone Moore comments on the opportunity

Moore was the heavy favorite to be Jim Harbaugh’s successor. Moore was Michigan’s offensive coordinator during its national championship run this past season. However, due to multiple suspensions leveled on Harbaugh, Moore boasted a 5-0 record as Michigan’s head coach in 2023, including wins over Penn State and Ohio State.

Moore is excited to get to work.

“I want to thank Coach Harbaugh for the faith that he has displayed in me over the past six years and for supporting my growth as a football coach during that time,” Moore said. “I have been preparing my entire coaching career for this opportunity and I can’t think of a better place to be head coach than at the University of Michigan.

“We will do everything each day as a TEAM to continue the legacy of championship football that has been played at Michigan for the past 144 years. Our standards will not change. We will be a smart, tough, dependable, relentless, and enthusiastic championship-level team that loves football and plays with passion for the game, the winged helmet and each other.

“We will also continue to achieve excellence off the field, in the classroom and in our communities. I am excited to start working in this new role with our players, coaches and staff.”

Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Michigan is set to introduce Moore as its head coach at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday.
