Report: Sherrone Moore finalizes first Michigan staff with hiring of Louisiana DC LaMar Morgan as DB coach
Michigan has had to overhaul their staff, especially on defense, with the coaches who decided to leave this offseason, including those who followed Jim Harbaugh to Los Angeles. However, that has led to new faces joining the sideline in Ann Arbor. That includes the apparent latest and final hire by Sherrone Moore.
According to Matt Zenitz at 247, the Wolverines are reportedly hiring LaMar Morgan as their new defensive backs coach. He most recently served as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Louisiana, his alma mater, over the past two seasons.
Over the past dozen years, Morgan has also been on staffs at Vanderbilt, Western Carolina, UL-Monroe, Houston. He returned to the program and has since spent the last two campaigns there.
In ’22 and ’23, the Ragin’ Cajuns allowed 25.7 points per game. That featured a Top-40 unit that allowed only 22.8 in the first of the two seasons. They also gave up an average of just under 375 yards per contest.
However, it were some other defensive statistics that jump out from Morgan’s time as coordinator. In total, Louisiana posted 63 sacks and forced 46 turnovers over the last two years. 28 of those turnovers came by way of interceptions while 18 more came from recoveries off of 23 forced fumbles. That included this past season where the Ragin’ Cajuns tied with seven teams, including, ironically, the maize & blue, at No. 1 in the nation in defensive scores with five.
Morgan lettered for four years at Louisiana as a safety. In his career, he posted 111 tackles, nine pass breakups, and four interceptions in 40 appearances with the team.
Morgan will join Moore’s staff at Michigan under new DC Wink Martindale. They arrive after their past defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter, joined Harbaugh with the Chargers. Still, per Zenitz, he played some role in this decision. Minter apparently recommended Morgan after the two crossed paths in Nashville with the Commodores.

Morgan apparently impressed during his interview with the Wolverines. Now, following his hire, he will now look to impress with what his secondary does on the field as the final piece of Moore’s first staff as head coach at Michigan.
Brian Jean-Mary expected to return to Michigan as linebackers coach
Sherrone Moore is continuing to fill out his coaching staff following departures stemming from Jim Harbaugh‘s exit to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to The Wolverine, Moore’s newest addition is bringing back Tennessee defensive assistant Brian Jean-Mary to the Wolverines’ coaching staff.
Jean-Mary spent one year at Michigan as the linebackers coach in 2020 working under then-defensive coordinator Don Brown. Since he left the program, he has been in the SEC as a member of the Volunteers’ coaching staff under Josh Heupel.
