‘Next man up’ has been the mentality of the Michigan running back room over the past couple of weeks, as Blake Corum went down for the season with an injury. Donovan Edwards was the main player to step up, having a huge day in the Big Ten Championship game against Purdue. Winning the game’s MVP award, Edwards was not looking for any of the glory.

When talking to Fox’s Joel Klatt, Edwards took his screen time as an opportunity to begin the Blake Corum Heisman Trophy campaign. He said Corum would “easily” have won the award had he not gotten hurt. Even so, Edwards still thinks the trophy should be heading home to Ann Arbor.

“Shoutout Blake Corum,” Edwards said. “Blake Corum is the best running back in college football. He deservedly needs the Heisman. If he didn’t get hurt, he would have easily won the Heisman. Shoutout Blake Corum, this is for you baby.”

Edwards was right — Corum was one of the best running backs in college football this season. In 12 games, he ran for nearly 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns. Corum attempted to go against Ohio State but was not able to hold up before being ruled out for the year.

Donovan Edwards looking to win national championship

Michigan took a big step last season, beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten, and appearing the in the playoff. Now, another step was needed by becoming a serious national championship threat. They are exactly that, most likely being ranked No. 2 in the committee’s final rankings.

Edwards was asked what Michigan’s goals would be moving forward but he said it’s already been known. They want to be lifting the College Football Playoff trophy in early January.

“I mean, it’s kind of self-explanatory what our goals are,” said Edwards. “I believe that we’ve talked about it all year. Not much more that needs to be said.”

The Wolverines are likely heading to Arizona for their playoff semifinal matchup, facing off against TCU or an Ohio State rematch. Michigan will not care who the opponent is. A national championship is wanted by everyone involved with the program.
