Shane Griffith medically forfeits 174 pound title, Edmonth Ruth declared champion
Michigan’s Shane Griffith, the No. 2 seed at 174 pounds, will medical forfeit the 174 pound title to Illinois‘ Edmond Ruth.
Griffith appeared to suffer a knee injury during his semifinal match Saturday night and was seen Sunday morning walking very gingerly. He was not suited up to wrestle following the conclusion of the 149 pound finals Sunday.
Griffith, who became the favorite after top seed and three-time national champion Carter Starocci (Penn State) medically forfeited out, will finish second.
During the consolation semifinal round Sunday, Griffith came out of the tunnel and walked behind the broadcast table in his Michigan warmups. However, he walked gingerly around the floor.
Griffith won the 2021 NCAA title with Stanford and was a national finalist the very next year. After becoming an All-American in 2023, Griffith elected to use his graduate year in Ann Arbor for the 2023-24 season.
