The quarterback position has been an issue for head coach Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines early in the season. That led to Moore making a change and playing his third different quarterback, Jack Tuttle, in the loss to Washington.

Following the game, Moore backed Tuttle to be the Michigan starting quarterback moving forward, praising him for how he played in the game and the chance he gives Michigan to succeed moving forward.

“I think we’ll see,” Sherrone Moore said. “We’ll watch the film. Feel good about the way he played. Feel good about what he did. So, right now, if we had to play tomorrow, I’d say Tuttle would be the starting quarterback. Want to build stuff for us to be successful with him and us to be successful with Donovan [Edwards] and Kalel [Mullings] and the rest of our guys. So, feel like he gives us a great chance to win and we’ll just clean up the turnovers and go from there.”

Sherrone Moore made the decision to turn from Alex Orji, who had completed just three of seven passes for 15 yards early. When he did make the change to Jack Tuttle, the offense managed to score three possessions in a row while he threw for 98 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Coming into Fall Camp, Moore added that Tuttle was someone who the team had confidence in. However, a lingering injury put the seventh-year quarterback behind the eight ball.

“There’s always a sense when you’ve got a seventh-year guy playing that he’s got a chance to be good since he’s played a lot of college football,” Moore said. “But he’s got to get healthy and our job is to coach football. It’s the doctor’s job to tell us he can play. So, that’s what we did.”

Jack Tuttle brings tons of experience to the Michigan offense. He previously played for Utah and Indiana before coming to Ann Arbor in 2023.

“I thought he came out and gave us a spark early,” Moore said. “Obviously, three straight drives we had a touchdown, field goal, touchdown, so I think the players fed off of that. He practiced well all week and got back healthy which is great for us, and we’ll see. But positive, positive. I think he gave us a spark, so we’ll see if he gets to be the starter. It looks like he gives us the best chance. We’ve got to clean up the turnover at the end, but he definitely had an exciting start to the game.”

Michigan started the season with Davis Warren at quarterback and moved to the athletic Alex Orji after that. A major reason why the Wolverines and Sherrone Moore didn’t turn to Jack Tuttle earlier, however, was that injury and getting his confidence built up again.

“Last week, it was his first week back of — we thought the doctors clearing him,” Moore said. “He’s practiced and done things but really got it in this week and did good. So, felt confident of getting him back in the game.”

Michigan’s next game is against Illinois on the road. It’s a game where the Wolverines will want to get back on track but it won’t be easy against a talented opponent.
