Following Michigan‘s national championship last season, offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was elevated to head coach. Amid that coaching change, a goal of his has been to maintain the program’s culture.

While at Big Ten Media Days, Moore credited Michigan’s offensive line, in particular, for helping the program to maintain its culture.

“The thing that keeps me awake at night the most is my four-year-old daughter kicking me in my back,” Sherrone Moore joked. “Besides that, it’s making sure that our culture of our o-line stays the same. Our players have done an outstanding job of keeping the culture, keeping the togetherness, the brotherhood, and really it’s a testament to them. Bringing in the right staff was a huge piece for us, bringing in the right people.”

The offensive line is being coached by Grant Newsome. It’s his third season working as a full-time assistant for Michigan and his first as the team’s offensive line coach. He’s been with the program in some capacity, including as a player, since 2015, giving him plenty of insight into the program’s culture.

“Coach Newsome has done an unbelievable job mentoring and leading our offensive linemen, and all those players have really taken the reigns. They’ve seen what it looks like, what it feels like, what it means to practice that way for us to be really good up front.”

Sherrone Moore has a strong offensive line background in his own right. It’s the position he played and later coached, including at Michigan where he was the offensive line coach and the offensive coordinator for the Wolverines.

“So, being the head coach, obviously having the offensive line background,” Moore said. “I’m gonna take a lot of pride in making sure that line is ready to go when we hit game one.”

Michigan HC Sherrone Moore focused on culture, finding the best fits in recruiting

Culture has been a focus for Sherrone Moore in everything he does. That includes in recruiting, where he wants to find the best fit possible.

“All great fits, all great people, all great families, so excited for all the guys at different positions to make an impact on our team in different ways,” Moore said.

“Just recruiting everybody, recruiting not only them but their families. Being able to touch every position, be involved with it, it’s been something I’ve wanted to do. Tried to do that when I was recruiting positions anyway, getting involved with different positions. Making sure the roster, making sure people are fits for our program is the number one thing for me. Everywhere, find the best players possible. Find the best players that fit us and keep going from there.”
