Sherrone Moore declines commenting on Michigan's quarterback battle

One quarterback is eventually going to win the position battle at Michigan this offseason. For now, though, Sherrone Moore is giving no comment on the state of the competition in Ann Arbor.

A reporter asked Moore about the Wolverines’ quarterbacks while at the SMSB National College Showcase on Thursday. Moore said that he has no issue being patient in naming a starter for the Maize and Blue and shut the rest of the questions down from there.

“Very comfortable,” Moore said in regards to waiting to name Michigan’s starting QB, adding with a smile: “I’m not going to answer any questions about the quarterback situation.”

Several names are in contention at quarterback for the Wolverines with five being on scholarship. Anthony Arnou is also on the roster.

Alex Orji, Davis Warren, and Jack Tuttle are three names well within the competition. Jayden Denegal and Jadyn Davis are in the room for Michigan as well.

Orji was one of two that appeared in the program’s spring game last month. In that outing, he scored the only touchdown for the losing team. He completed 13-of-18 throws for 103 yards and rushed five times for 19 yards and the score. Orji enters his junior year having far more carries in his role than passing attempts over his nine appearance. However, he still comes in with the most potential and could now be getting his shot to start.

Warren is also in the running as the opposing quarterback from the spring game. He went 6-for-9 for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the 17-7 win for the Maize team. Now, after appearing in eight games over the last two seasons, the senior certainly has what it takes himself.

Tuttle, a sixth-year player who spent time at Utah and Indiana before coming to Michigan, is also an option. He brings in 1,031 yards, six touchdowns and picks apiece, and a 59.8% completion rate in 21 career games with the Hooisers and Wolverines, including six last season. He missed time in the spring due to injury but Moore has maintained that he’ll be in the running too.

Denegal, a former three-star and Top-30 QB from 2022, has also appeared in seven games as an underclassmen. As for Davis, an incoming freshman out of Charlotte, he’s the highest ranked in the room as a four-star that was the No. 106 prospect, No. 8 QB, and No. 5 player out of his state in 2024.

Someone from these five or six will take the place of J.J. McCarthy at some point for this fall. It’s just not something that Moore is going to address for now with a lot to still determine between now and a kickoff that’s three months away.
