Sherrone Moore emphasizes Michigan resetting focus after taking late 1st half lead over Michigan State

Michigan was behind the eight ball for most of the first half of Saturday night’s rivalry matchup with Michigan State in Ann Arbor. The Spartans got the ball first and, despite coming up empty, looked strong driving the length of the field.

On the second drive, after a quick punt from Michigan, the Spartans went down and punched in a touchdown by pounding the ball on the ground, and it seemed a long day was due for the Wolverines. Instead, Michigan’s defense bowed and the offense found its form.

A touchdown pass to Colston Loveland with less than a minute in the half — plus a botched extra point — made it 7-6, Spartans. Then the defense came up with a clutch fumble, setting up the offense to swipe three more points and put Michigan into the half, leading 9-7, however improbably.

With the vibes good and getting the ball to start the second half, head coach Sherrone Moore explained that his team will need to make sure they refocus at halftime to not squander the advantage.

“We’ve gotta reset our focus,” Moore said. “We can’t think that that’s going to carry over into the next half and I think we’ve gotta reset that focus and carry the momentum and go out and fight this half.”

Moore also gave props to his squad for weathering the initial surge from Michigan State before clawing back into the game. He specifically gave props to quarterback Davis Warren, who is starting again after beginning the season as the starter for the first three games.

“We got the momentum back, so our kids kept fighting,” Moore said. “We didn’t start off very strong. Offensively struggled moving and I thought the defense did a good job and I think our O-line really stepped up in that last drive and made some really good throws. Davis made some really good throws and had some completions down the field and defense, I think they adjusted after that one drive, they’ve been doing a pretty good job.”
