Sherrone Moore makes first public comments on hiring of Chip Lindsey as Michigan offensive coordinator
Michigan officially confirmed the addition of new offensive coordinator and play-caller Chip Lindsey in a press release Friday afternoon.
Lindsey joined the Wolverines’ coaching staff after two seasons as North Carolina‘s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Mack Brown, who was fired prior to the final game of the regular season. Lindsey, who went 15-19 in three seasons as Troy‘s head coach (2019-21), also has coordinator experience at Auburn, Arizona State, and Southern Miss.
“Coach Lindsey is an innovative offensive mind who likes to run and pass the ball with great efficiency and balance,” first-year Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement announcing Lindsey’s hiring. “After spending a considerable amount of time together, I knew that Chip was the right fit to coordinate our offense. We share the same philosophy regarding structure, scheme and player development, and I know his leadership of the offense will place our players in the best position to succeed. We are excited to have Chip, Cecily and their children join our University of Michigan and Michigan Football family.”
Lindsey orchestrated a balanced offense during his time in Chapel Hill, averaging 32.3 points and 423.4 yards of total offense per game in 2024, including the ACC’s No. 1-ranked rushing offense averaging 189.5 yards per game this past season. Lindsey directed UNC junior running back Omarion Hampton, a Doak Walker Award finalist, to back-to-back ACC-leading efforts with 3,164 total rushing yards over the paast two seasons, including 1,660 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024.
“I am excited to join Coach Moore’s staff at the University of Michigan,” Lindsey said in the same statement. “We share the same vision for offensive football and Coach Moore has assembled an outstanding staff that is aligned in its objectives to help our players succeed. I look forward to leading and serving the young men in this program while helping them achieve their goals on and off the football field. My family and I are excited to join the Michigan family. Go Blue!”
In 2023, Lindsey led a Tar Heels offense that was run by quarterback Drake Maye, who was drafted third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft after leading the ACC in total yards (4,057), passing yards (3,608), passing yards per game (300.7) and ranked second in the league with 24 touchdowns.

Chip Lindsey takes over disappointing Michigan offense
Lindsey comes to Ann Arbor as the Wolverines are looking to re-ignite an offense that took major steps back from 2023. He’ll also have a chance to coach No. 1 overall quarterback prospect in the 2025 signing class, Bryce Underwood.
Michigan fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell days after the conclusion of the regular season. In his stead, tight ends coach Steve Casula will serve as the interim offensive coordinator.
“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction,” head coach Sherrone Moore said in a release announcing the move.. “This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors.”
The Wolverines ranked among the worst passing offenses in the nation in 2024, ranking 129th out of 133 teams in the FBS, with only Iowa and the three service academies ranking lower. The Wolverines were one of seven FBS teams in 2024 to average fewer than 150 passing yards per game.
