Sherrone Moore on Michigan QB battle: 'All those guys have all the attributes you need'
Sherrone Moore didn’t budge when it came to the Michigan quarterback battle this fall. The Wolverines head coach steps into his first year as the full-time man in charge.
With that, comes a big decision to replace JJ McCarthy, who was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. A battle between Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren seems to be the main focus.
But right now, no one took a lead as Moore feels they’re all capable.
“I mean, all those guys have all the attributes you need to be a successful starting quarterback at the University of Michigan and a lot of other universities,” Moore said at Big Ten Media Days. “And we’re super blessed to have all those guys. Everybody has their own traits and their own things that make them a little different.
“But I think the number one thing we’re looking for out of any guy that is our starting quarterback is one, that they’re a playmaker that they can make plays, that they’ll make the right decision, they’ll take care of the football, and that they want to win and they’ll do anything for the team to win. So really, we’re gonna look for those attributes and then go from there.”
As far as a timeline for a decision for Michigan’s most important position, Moore didn’t give an exact date when asked.
“Yeah, I think the ideal timeline is when we feel like we got the guy that’s going to help us win,” Moore said. “There’s not really a date, there’s not really a time. We’ll have a good feel as a staff, we got really good coaches. Kirk Campbell’s a phenomenal, phenomenal coach. He’s gonna do an outstanding job with our offense. So I know he’s gonna make a great decision and we’ll be there to make it together.”

Orji appears to be the leader in the clubhouse based on his dual threat capabilities. He also appeared in six games last season, rushing 15 times for one touchdown and 86 yards.
Then again, there’s not much experience among Michigan’s quarterbacks. The veteran is Tuttle, who spent the first four years of his college career at Indiana before coming to Michigan in 2023.
Tuttle has a career stat line of 1,031 yards, six touchdowns, six interceptions and a 59.8% completion percentage across 21 game appearances.
Warren goes into his third year with the program, but has only thrown nine passes in his career. Safe to say, Moore might want the Michigan QB battle to go as long as possible to get enough film before the opener.
