Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy had a rough outing in the Wolverine’s 31-6 win over Bowling Green this weekend. That’s mostly because he posted a career-high in interceptions with three that he threw to the Falcons.
Even so, Michigan OC Sherrone Morre isn’t at all worried about the picks. As he said postgame, some of those were just the result of McCarthy trying too hard to make a play. In the end, he sees where their quarterback was coming from and knows that McCarthy is going to correct those mistakes.
“We just tell him, if he’s going to throw it out, to throw it out of bounds. That’s J.J. just trying to make a play. Sometimes that happens when you try to make a play – things like that take place,” said Moore. “It’s a learning experience for him.”
“One of them was a spacing issue and then the other one was a decision,” Moore noted. “Those things come into play and we just gotta continue to fix those. I know he will.”
McCarthy finished the night by going 8-13 for a season-low 61.3% completion rate as well as 143 yards and two touchdowns.
However, after a quick scoring drive to start, McCarthy threw back-to-back picks on Michigan’s second and third possessions. He then completed the wrong kind of hat trick with his third in the final minute of the third quarter.
With that said, there’s no questioning McCarthy’s status as one of the better quarterbacks in the country. It was just very clearly an off night for him which Moore fully expects him to bounce back from, considering how much that the nation’s No. 2 team is behind him.
“He’s obviously played extremely well in the first two games,” said Moore. “We still have trust and faith in him, he’s still our quarterback, we still love him. Those are things that he’ll learn from and that he’ll definitely get better at and from.”

McCarthy takes full blame for multi-interception game
The Michigan Wolverines controlled the game in their 31-6 win over Bowling Green. However, they never dominated the game largely because of the mistakes that JJ McCarthy and the offense made.
After the game, McCarthy took the blame for those mistakes, specifically his three interceptions, by saying that he’s going to get better from those mistakes in the long run.
“I’m gonna take all those on the chin,” McCarthy said. “Put them all on me. There’s a lot of stuff that just obviously didn’t go my way and didn’t go the offense’s way. But I just can’t wait to watch the tape and see the mistakes that were made and get better from it.”
“I’m gonna take all those on the chin,” said McCarthy. “They were on me.”
McCarthy emphasized that he’s going to need to go back and look at the film to figure out what went wrong for him and the offense on drives this game.
“No matter what, whether it’s a great throw or an interception, I’m always gonna move on and stay in the present moment, no matter what it is. Just didn’t go well after the first one and I just gotta watch the film and see what I can do better.”
