Coming from an offensive background himself, Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore wasn’t content with the team’s offensive performance in 2024. With that, he made the decision to bring in Chip Lindsey as a new offensive coordinator for the Wolverines.

Interestingly, Moore went to an interesting place to find insight into Lindsey. He spoke to New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye for some insight into the offensive coordinator.

Ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl, Sherrone Moore met with reporters. There, he explained how Maye was able to actually influence the decision to bring Chip Lindsey in.

“It was a factor,” Moore said. “It helped that Drake called me too. It was a great conversation. He spoke so highly of him, and I really love Chip, man. He’s been great. The players love him. The coaches love him, but I think he’s going to bring a lot of value to our offense.”

Chip Lindsey was actually Drake Maye’s offensive coordinator at North Carolina in 2023, Maye’s final college season before he made the jump to the NFL. In that season, Maye was phenomenal, completing 63.3 percent of passes for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns to only nine interceptions. He also rushed for 449 yards and nine touchdowns.

“[Said] that he felt that he progressed more in his career in that year with Chip than he did at any point in his career,” Moore said. “Really felt like without him he wouldn’t have got the chance to go so high in the Draft. So getting that stamp of approval was really huge for me. But just talking to Chip and bringing him in on an interview was really huge for us.”

Along with North Carolina, Lindsey was an offensive coordinator at UCF, Auburn, Arizona State, and Southern Miss along with other stops as an assistant. From 2019-2021, he was also the head coach at Troy.

Michigan struggled on offense in 2024, particularly at the quarterback position, which saw players cycle through. Davis Warren, who eventually won the starting job, completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 1,126 yards and six touchdowns to nine interceptions in eight games. Then, as a team, the Wolverines finished the season just 130th out of 134 teams in passing offense, averaging 133.6 passing yards per game.

Along with bringing in Chip Lindsey, Sherrone Moore has been aggressive in adding new quarterbacks. That includes transfer Mikey Keene and flipping five-star Class of 2025 recruit Bryce Underwood. Together, they should provide a positive outlook on offense for the Wolverines.
