Jim Harbaugh may not be the head coach at Michigan anymore but he does clearly still care about the program and wants to see it succeed under first time head coach Sherrone Moore.

In fact, as Moore explained during Big Ten Media Days, he and Harbaugh are still in fairly close contact with one another and Harbaugh has made it clear that he wants to be someone who Moore can lean on when he needs help.

“I just talked to him about two days ago and just continue to say do you, because it was working and continues to work,” Sherrone Moore said. “So, for me, he’s always himself. He’s always going to tell me the truth and I’ll talk to him as often as possible.”

Sherrone Moore initially joined the Michigan staff in 2018 as a tight ends coach. In 2021, he transitioned into being the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. His time as an assistant under Harbaugh would culminate with him being the team’s acting head coach and offensive coordinator in 2023, filling in for Harbaugh when he was suspended.

“He told me his phone is there and he’s just waiting to be counted on,” Moore said. “So, I’m excited to call him again soon.”

Jim Harbaugh finished his time at Michigan with a record of 86-25. That included building the program back into a dominant force in the sport, winning three straight Big Ten titles, beating Ohio State three straight times, and winning the national championship before returning to the NFL.

The culture that Jim Harbaugh built at Michigan is still going to be a piece of the program. That culture and recent success is, after all, a key reason why Sherrone Moore was promoted. At the same time, Moore knows that he isn’t Harbaugh and can’t pretend to be moving forward.

“Yeah, it’s being me. I can’t be Coach. I can’t be Jim Harbaugh and I never will be. So, for me, I just go as I go,” Moore said.

“I’m not going to change how I am. When I get excited, I’m going to get excited. When I want to yell smash, I’m going to yell smash. When I want us to play violent, I’m going to let our players know. That’s what I’m going to do. But, when I love them, I love them. When I feel like they need a hug, I’m going to give them a hug.”

Expectations are high for Sherrone Moore and Michigan moving forward and they’re not backing away from those expectations.
