Sherrone Moore reveals there is no frontrunner in Michigan quarterback competition
In updating Michigan’s quarterback battle, Sherrone Moore shared there was no new update.
Moore spoke about the Wolverines’ competition between Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle, and Davis Warren while meeting with the media earlier on Tuesday. He said all of them have been playing well to this point of fall camp with each having good showings. That leaves the eventual decision on a starter still undecided with no player having any lead at all right now.
“I mean they’ve all been really good,” said Moore. “They’ve had their days that one guy has been good, one guy has been really good, one guy has been better. So not a frontrunner. Really kind of all even playing right now.”
Moore once again also didn’t provide a timeline of when an announcement would come for Michigan’s QB1. It could be in the upcoming week or two or the very the week of their opener. It might also be on the day of their first game against Fresno State on August 31st.
“No,” said Moore. “I mean, could be the week of, could be the day of the game. I think we’ll see.”
Per the latest out of Ann Arbor, Orji and Warren have seen most of the reps at the position. That could be for no other major reason than Tuttle being limited by an injury in camp. That’s more of the same for him as health held him back in the spring as well.
With that context along with age playing a factor, Warren would technically be in some sense of a lead. He has also, per reports, been playing well in his passing opportunities thus far in camp. This comes as he enters his fourth season at Michigan.

However, Orji and his potential are not to be dismissed either as he goes into his third year with the Wolverines. He provides the option of a dual-threat at quarterback with where he is now as a passer combined with what he has always done physically as a runner.
None of this is to suggest that Tuttle is out of it either, especially per Moore, with it just depending on how available he is from here on out at practice.
Michigan might keep this conversation going all the way through the rest of the month until kickoff. Recent history also suggests that it could potentially continue on into the season.
That leaves a large timeframe still open for Michigan, led by Moore and offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, to make the choice of their quarterback.
“We’ll see how he we go into this week, next week, and then game week,” said Moore.
