As spring practice starts to wind down at Michigan, the buzz continues to grow around freshman Bryce Underwood. The top recruit in the 2025 cycle has been vying for the Wolverines’ starting quarterback job, although Sherrone Moore said a decision might not come soon.

Moore said he expects the competition between Moore, sophomore Jadyn Davis and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene – who’s been out with an injury – to continue through fall practice. That allows the staff to put together a thorough evaluation before ultimately making a decision just prior to the first game of the year.

Looking back at his experience, Moore added the best competitions he has overseen ran into the fall. As a result, he expects to make some sort of announcement prior to the season opener against New Mexico.

“I feel like it usually carries into fall camp,” Moore said on The Hard Count with On3’s J.D. PicKell. “All the real good battles that I’ve been a part of, you can say something in spring, but then it changes. We’re going to take our time with the process of who that person is going [to be]. It’s so important. That person’s going to have the ball in their hands every single play and make so many decisions.

“So for us, it’s probably going to go into fall camp. And then, probably a week before the first game, make a decision and make the announcement then.”

Underwood has been impressive during spring practice, and On3’s Pete Nakos previously reported where he stood in the quarterback competition through the early part of camp. The Belleville (Mich.) product arrived in Ann Arbor as the No. 1 overall player from the 2025 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also became the first player to ever receive a 100 rating from On3.

Sherrone Moore spoke highly of Underwood with the spring game looming this week. However, there’s a competitive edge in his freshman QB that sometimes needs reining in.

“He’s been outstanding,” Moore said. “He’s one of those kids that you’ve got to pull back, you’ve got to tell him to get some rest, make sure you’re sleeping, the recovery piece because he’s just a worker. He never stops. He wants to be the best. He’ll do anything to be the best. He’s a great teammate, a great young man.

“The foundation that his parents set for him has been awesome. He does everything at an elite level, on and off the field. So just excited for him and for us as the future goes.”
