Sherrone Moore shares message he gave Mikey Keene during transfer process

Mikey Keene will be one of a few new options at quarterback next season at Michigan.
A week after adding him in the transfer portal, Sherrone Moore spoke about the pickup of Keene. He said that the transfer is aware that he’ll be in contention to be the Wolverines’ QB1 next fall.
“Yeah, it’s open competition. Nobody’s promised a starting spot. Everybody’s got to earn it and he really understands that, even with the guys we’ve brought in,” said Moore. “He’s really excited to push the whole room.”
Keene comes to Ann Arbor after two seasons apiece at Fresno State and UCF. He is 793-1,170 (67.8%) when passing for 8,245 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions in that collegiate career.
With that, Keene is the No. 75 QB and the No. 973 transfer in On3’s 2025 Top Transfer Portal Players.
As for why the maize & blue recruited him, Moore said his experience and their familiarity with him made a difference in adding him in the portal. That included seeing him in The Big House this fall where he completed 61.1% of his throws for 235 yards, a score, and two picks in a 20-point loss to Michigan.

“He’s a guy that’s played a lot of football, that has a lot of experience, and made plays at all different levels. You know, his familiarity with Chip Lindsey was really huge. They had a connection previously so that helped,” said Moore. “But, you know, just all the reviews that we got from him as a person, as a player? And then it was huge that we played him this year. You know, we saw him live in action and we saw him make some really good throws and do some things dynamic.”
Now, Keene, again, will be trying to be their starter along with Davis Warren, Bryce Underwood, and Jadyn Davis. He’s there to compete for it and Moore is ready to have him in there to do it.
“Really ready for him to get going in this program,” said Moore.
