The wide receiver room for the Michigan football team is going to be notably different in 2024, with the departure of two stalwart pass catchers in Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson. Additionally, Michigan lost a pair of former four-star recruits to the transfer portal this offseason.

But new head coach Sherrone Moore is bullish on the group Michigan has coming back at receiver in a retooled offense. While they’re not quite as seasoned as Wilson and Johnson were, the likes of Semaj Morgan and Tyler Morris are two players that Moore is excited about.

“Feel good about it, feel really good about it,” Moore said recently at a camp in Detroit. “People forget about the guys like Tyler Morris and Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore, all those guys, so super stoked for them and Kendrick Bell’s another guy we’re excited about, so we’ve got a good job done.”

Morris, who will be a junior for the 2024 season, and Morgan, a sophomore and most-seasoned player from the 2023 campaign, will headline the receivers for Michigan.

Morris has appeared in 23 career games, making 16 catches for 222 yards and a touchdown in the Rose Bowl against Alabama. Morgan played in all 15 games as a true freshman in 2023, making 22 catches for 204 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and taking four carries for 67 yards and another two touchdowns.

Moore, also a true freshman in 2023, played in 13 games and made four catches for 32 yards while playing frequently on special teams, too.

Bell is entirely unproven at wide receiver, brought in as a quarterback recruit and moving to the position now in Ann Arbor. Bell was a scout teamer in 2023 and has yet to see the field for Michigan.

But the best pass catcher on Michigan’s roster likely isn’t a receiver but junior tight end Colston Loveland, who is a presumptive top tight end prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft.

In 29 career games, Loveland has 61 catches for 884 yards and six touchdowns and brings a hard-to-defend blend of size, strength, speed and fluidity as a route runner and pass catcher. Beyond Loveland, the Wolverines have also been bullish on fellow tight end Marlin Klein making a leap and filling out the No. 2 role that Michigan will depend upon in 12 and 13 personnel packages. Klein has appeared in 12 career games, making one catch for eight yards.

“Obviously when you’ve got a tight end like Colston Loveland, you’ve got a great receiver there, as well,” Moore said. “Him and Marlin Klein in the tight end position, we’re super excited about.”
