Sherrone Moore: 'There's no honeymoon year' for Michigan in 2024
Sherrone Moore took the head coaching job at Michigan knowing the expectations that come with the position. In 2024, there’s no room for regression in Ann Arbor.
The standard was set during the Wolverines’ national championship-winning season from a year ago. Of course, Moore, who served four games as acting head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s absence in 2023, was a massive part of the culture built within the Michigan football program. He wants to keep it rolling this fall.
Now sliding over into Harbaugh’s old seat and taking over the program, Moore explained why he doesn’t expect the Wolverines to suffer many setbacks in 2024.
“All those experiences have shaped and helped me to right now to allow me the chance to get this opportunity with this great staff that I have with great players to lead this program,” Moore said at Big Ten Media Days. “And no, there’s no honeymoon year. We’re just ready to attack. All my life I’ve been a competitor. I’ve wanted to win, and I’ve tried to win everywhere we’ve been. There’s no time off. Let’s take a step back, like that’s not our goal.
“We know what we want to do, we know how we want to attack it and we’re hungrier than ever.”
Before becoming the Michigan headman, Moore worked at Michigan under Harbaugh as an offensive assistant since the 2018 season.

By 2023, he was also the team’s offensive coordinator. Known for his ability to build strong offensive line units, being able to say that he comes in with some in-game head coaching experience from his time as the acting head coach for a four-week stretch in 2023. Now, he must continue that transition into being the full-time coach.
Most fans will remember his 32-consecutive run plays called against the Penn State Nittany Lions last season. Then quarterback JJ McCarthy threw just eight passes during the contest — and he could have thrown less because of how dominant Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards were on the ground. It was one of the most memorable stretches of his job leading the program on game day.
McCarthy can forever call himself a national champion and a first-round NFL Draft choice, so there’s likely no hard feelings there.
Jokes aside, the Wolverines want to get down to business early and often this season. In some ways, the outcome of the 2024 season is more important for Michigan football moving forward than the national championship. What happens to Michigan in 2024 could be a sneak preview of what the Wolverines will look like under Moore’s guide. To the first-year head coach, he appears to believe it’ll be business as usual.
