We have just passed the halfway point of the college football regular season. And with that, ESPN’s NFL Draft expert Todd McShay has been able to see 2023 draftees and assess their potential draft position. Recently McShay commented on Wolverines defensive end Mike Morris. And according to the ESPN expert, the Michigan defensive lineman is a Day-2 prospect.

McShay explained what makes Morris a unique draft prospect and compared him to former Wolverines defensive end and No.2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Aiden Hutchinson.

“What a unique combination of skills he has,” said McShay. “From the size — 6’5, 290 — to the length, to the explosiveness. He’s supposed to have a great combine and workout. I think that will only help elevate him. But watching him this season, after Aidan Hutchinson (left), now he’s the starter. He’s become, in my mind, a Day 2 prospect.”

Morris might be a victim of recency bias given Hutchinson’s impressive season, along with that of the Wolverine’s star defensive lineman David Ojabo in 2021. So far, Morris’s campaign is shaping up a lot closer to Ojabo’s, who ended up being a second-round pick. Hutchinson’s last season was very much worthy of the Heisman ceremony nod he received. The now Detroit Lions defensive lineman had 62 total tackles, 36 solo, 14 sacks, three passes deflected, two forced fumbles, and recovered one.

Morris closer to Wolviernes Ojabo than Hutchinson

Ojabo was widely considered a likely first-round selection heading into the 2022 Draft process. However, after rupturing his Achilles during Michigan’s pro day, the other Wolverines’ star slid into the second round. Morris has recorded 15 tackles, 12 solo, five sacks, and one forced fumble in seven games. In comparison, last season, Ojabo finished the year with 35 total tackles, 24 solo, 11 sacks, five forced fumbles, three passes deflected, and one fumble recovered.

Despite not being mentioned as a possible day-one pick, Morris has the size and physical attributes worthy of being selected in the first round. If the senior from Belle Glade, FL, can put together a solid second half of the season, he can easily see his draft stock rise and find himself going in the first round.
