This weekend’s matchup between the undefeated Michigan Wolverines and the undefeated Michigan State Spartans is the game of the weekend. The game features two of the top rushing attacks in all of college football. Both teams like to run the rock, but they get it done in different ways schematically.

FOX’s Joel Klatt summed up both of these two teams quite well recently.

“These two teams are built similarly, although not identical,” he said. “Clearly, they’re both running the football well. Michigan State has the leading rusher in the country. Michigan is one of the best rushing teams in all of the Big Ten conference.”

Michigan running game

Running back Blake Corum spearheads the Wolverines rushing attack and he and fellow running back Hassan Haskins have shredded opposing defenses for over 1,300 combined total rushing yards this season. Corum has rushed 116 times for 729 rushing yards, while rushing for 10 touchdowns.

So far this season, he’s averaging over 100 rushing yards per game. In the Wolverines 32-29 win over Nebraska, he had one of the coolest end zone celebrations of the season when he mimicked eating corn on the cob after he scored.

Senior running back Hassan Haskins has been stellar in the backfield this year for Michigan, too. Both players are huge reasons why the Wolverines currently sit at 7-0 in a three-way tie atop the Big Ten standings with Michigan State and Ohio State. Haskins has rushed for over 600 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns so far in 2021.

Check out the sheer power he used to push the pile against Northwestern last weekend.

The Michigan rushing attack currently ranks fifth in the nation in rushing yards per game (253.2).

Michigan State running game

Kenneth Walker III was undoubtedly one of the biggest transfer portal lands of the offseason. He’s dominated every single game for Michigan State and the former Wake Forest running back is currently second in the country in total rushing yards (997). He leads the nation in total rushing yards per game (142.4)

Walker erupted for over 200 yards in two games this season (Rutgers and Northwestern). There’s no question he’s been carrying the Spartans on his back all season long. He rushed for over 100 yards in three games last season for the Demon Deacons, but he’s taken his game to new heights in 2021 and established himself as one of the best players in all of college football.

Here he is below ripping off a 94-yard touchdown run against Rutgers–the longest play from scrimmage in Michigan State football history.

The Michigan State rushing attack currently ranks 32nd in the nation in rushing yards per game (200.4)

Rush defense matchups

Defensively, it’s harder for this game to get much tighter with these two rushing defenses. The Michigan rush defense ranks 25th in the nation and they are allowing 116.5 yards per game on the ground, whereas the Michigan State rush defense is allowing 119 yards on the ground, ranking them 29th in the nation.

The Wolverines (7-0) and Spartans (7-0) square off on Saturday in East Lansing, Michigan. Kickoff is noon EST. College GameDay will be in East Lansing for the top-10 matchup.
