Former Nebraska Cornhuskers receiver Malachi Coleman committed to transfer to Minnesota, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Coleman, a former Top 60 overall recruit in the 2023 class according to On3’s Industry Rankings, has three years of eligibility after appearing in just one game during the 2024 season. Coleman is 40th-ranked receiver in the portal, according to the On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings.

Coleman is the Gophers’ 14th commitment out of the transfer portal since it opened Dec. 9, joining fellow receivers Javon Tracy (Miami of Ohio) and Logan Loya (UCLA), running backs Cole Cabana (Michigan) and Cameron Davis (Washington), interior offensive linemen Marcellus Marshall (UCF), Kahlee Tafai (Washington) and Dylan Ray (Kentucky), cornerback Jaylen Bowden (North Carolina Central), defensive lineman Steven Curtis (Illinois State), tight end Drew Biber (Purdue), quarterback Zach Pyron (Georgia Tech) and kicker Brady Denaburg (Syracuse).

Despite not playing much in 2024, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound wide receiver flashed serious potential as a true freshman in 2023, finishing with eight catches for 139 yards and a touchdown in 11 games.

Coleman played 335 offensive snaps in 2023, according to Pro Football Focus, and started six of the 11 games he appeared in. Of those 139 receiving yards, 44 came on a long touchdown catch against Northwestern.

A former four-star prospect from Lincoln East High School, Malachi Coleman was the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 60 overall prospect — including the No. 10 wideout — in the 2023 class. He stood out as a junior in high school, turning 10 of his 17 catches into touchdowns that season while adding 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles on defense.

The transfer portal officially opened on Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers. That means roughly 25% of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year.
