Mississippi State picked up another loss again this past weekend, and guard Cameron Matthews expressed the collective team’s feelings in the postgame press conference.

“It’s just a real frustrated group of guys,” Matthews said. “We work too hard to be getting this close every game. We know these are the teams we can beat. Just gotta get back to the drawing board, figure some things out and get back right.”

The latest loss was a 61-59 defeat to Florida at home. Matthews had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but his put-back did not fall.

The Bulldogs had come back from a nine-point halftime deficit but couldn’t get over the hump for the final buzzer.

Cameron Matthews is averaging 6.5 points and 5.4 rebounds on the season for Mississippi State, who now sit at 12-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play after the Florida loss.

“I just try to lead by example, try to get everybody on the same page,” Matthews said. “Listen to Coach Jans because it’s about the little things, attention to detail, stuff like that. It might not be about the last play. It might be five plays before, 10 plays before. Everything add up.

Head coach Chris Jans also addressed the Bulldogs’ struggles to close out games and said they are looking at all different ways to right the ship.

“I was just talking about that with a couple of the — a couple my colleagues up there. That’s a really good question. And I hate this answer but it’s true: You know, if I knew the quick fix I would’ve done it already. I’m not sure why. And certainly that’s my job to know that,” Jans said. “We’re deep diving, looking at everything that’s offered to us from an analytical standpoint. From trying to get feedback from everyone on our staff and get their thoughts, like we always do on a lot of different subject matters.”
