Mississippi State quarterback Mike Wright is reportedly going back in the transfer portal after one season in Starkville, according to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports.

He tweeted Monday afternoon:

“Mississippi State QB Mike Wright is expected to enter the transfer portal, sources tell @247Sports. Wright, who transferred to Mississippi State from Vanderbilt, has made 14 career starts and has accounted for 34 career touchdowns.”

On3’s Pete Nakos was able to confirm this news.

The Vanderbilt transfer was the State starter while Rogers was out injured but MSU couldn’t get much off the ground offensively. Wright could be one of the fastest QBs in the country and he even took his skills to the State track team this year. The lack of production in the passing game ultimately hurt his chances of winning the job under Jeff Lebby.

He three for 453 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in 2023 for Mississippi State, also running for 324 yards and three more scores.

In three seasons with the Commodores, Mike Wright played in 24 games. During that time, he threw for 2,067 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also ran for 908 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mike Wright played high school football at Woodward Academy (Georgia), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 573 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

This news likely means Baylor QB Blake Shapen will take over the starting job for Mississippi State. He came in at the winter transfer portal window and is the clear frontrunner for the job with Wright gone.

Other MSU transfer news

Mississippi State wide receiver Justin Robinson is back in the transfer portal, On3 has learned. Robinson is in the portal for the second time after starting his career at Georgia.

This past season, he started seven games for the Bulldogs, finishing with 21 catches for 257 receiving yards.

After signing with Georgia for the class of 2020, Robinson appeared in one game as a true freshman that year.

The following season, he had a pair of catches for 18 yards, before entering the transfer portal. Robinson then came to Mississippi State, where he was immediately a key part of the offense.

In 2022, Justin Robinson caught 30 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns. He was the star of the ReliaQuest Bowl against Illinois to close out the year, catching seven passes for 81 yards to earn MVP honors.

This past season, his best game came against South Carolina. The Georgia native had six catches for 91 yards against the Gamecocks, recording season-highs in both categories.

After playing college football at two SEC schools, it will be interesting to see where Justin Robinson ends up next.
