Mississippi State has found its quarterback of the future, and it’s been the team’s top target from the jump.

Josh Flowers, the No. 16 QB in the On300, pledged to the Bulldogs just days after making an unofficial visit to Starkville. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Flowers landed an offer from Mississippi State after his junior season at Mobile (Ala.) Baker High School and made a trip out to soak up Starkville right out of the dead period last weekend.

“He gets better every day,” Baker High OC Chase Calcagni told On3 of his quarterback.

“His ceiling is insane and his game accuracy is next level. It was great last year, but even better this year. Without the drops, he would be completing 88 percent of his throws.”

Last year, Flowers piled up more than 1,400 yards on the ground.

“He is an even better runner this year and his vision and cuts when running the football are phenomenal,” Calcagni continued. “We don’t have as good of an O-line or receivers this year, so he has been putting the team on his back. He doesn’t care that we aren’t as talented and loves his teammates and will do anything for them.”

Flowers was leaning toward the Tide and the Hogs at different junctures of his recruitment before State came on strong in recent weeks. The arrow is pointing up for the Bulldogs’ newest commit.

“My favorite thing about him this year, he is turning into an elite leader,” the coach detailed. “He is shy at first when you meet him, but he is not shy around our guys and is our leader. He knows the offense like the back of his hand and is coaching up guys left and right.”

“He really is special. He is basically like an assistant coach to me,” Calcagni added of the 3.7 student-athlete. “Such a humble and amazing kid. Best player and overall person I have ever coached at the high school or college level.”

Alabama, Arkansas, TCU, N.C. State and Indiana were other programs in pursuit of Flowers, the No. 282 overall player in the On300 for 2024.
