Mississippi State associate head softball coach Tyler Bratton was ejected during Saturday’s loss to No. 11 Arkansas after picking up a base and throwing it after a home run was called back.

A two-run home run by the Bulldogs’ Chloe Malau’ulu was nullified after umpires ruled that her teammate Macy Graf left the base early before the two-run shot. The play would have cut Arkansas’ lead to two runs but instead, Mississippi State was shut out 11-0 in five innings.

Check out the video below, which shows Bratton picking up the first base and attempting to chuck it into into the outfield while being surrounded by umpires.

One of his star outfielders, Malau’ulu led the SEC in outfield assists and ranked second in the conference in outfield putouts in 2021. Bratton wants to see her rake any chance she can, but his emotions clearly got the better of him on that play and was rightfully tossed after disrupting the game.

Shortly after his ejection, Bratton posted a video to social media showing that he made the short trip down Lakeview Dr. from Nusz Park to Dudy Noble Field to take in MSU’s baseball Saturday game against South Carolina.

“Normally don’t get to see Saturday afternoon games at the Dude but here we are,” Bratton wrote on Twitter. “Let’s go boys!”

As it turns out, the Gamecocks ended up stomping the Bulldogs 14-5 before heading back home with a 2-1 series win. Meanwhile, Bratton’s softball club was getting run-ruled by the Razorbacks just up the street.

Bratton, who mostly works with the outfielders, is known as one of the most effective signal callers in the SEC. Calling plays from first or third base for Mississippi State since 2014, his baserunners have achieved an 84.4 percent success rate on stolen base attempts (373-for-442). He is currently in the midst of his 10th season coaching the Mississippi State softball team.

The loss to Arkansas dropped the Bulldogs to 23-12 on the season and 3-4 in SEC play. They have now lost four-straight conference games. MSU will look to avoid the series sweep when game three gets underway at 1 p.m. ET on SECN+. After that, the Bulldogs will have the weekend to recouperate before heading to College Station for a three-game weekend road trip against Texas A&M beginning on Saturday.

Bratton is expected to be coaching the bases as usual against the Razorbacks on Sunday.
