Mississippi State WR JJ Harrell plans to enter NCAA transfer portal
Mississippi State wide receiver JJ Harrell plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Harrell did not log any stats during his true freshman season in Starkville. He will have four years of eligibility remaining.
The 6 foot 1, 195-pound wideout is a former four-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 252 player in the country during the 2024 recruiting cycle, and was the No. 7 player out of the state of Mississippi.
He chose Mississippi State over the likes of Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama and LSU.
The news comes during the final Saturday of the 2024 regular season, shortly after fellow Bulldogs wide receiver Creed Wittemore announced his plan to enter the transfer portal as well.

Wittemore was a bit more productive than Harrell, given he spent two seasons in Starkville. Over that time, he racked up 15 receptions for 167 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, he’s rushed five times for 101 yards and two touchdowns, as well.
Mississippi State finished the regular season 2-10 overall and 0-8 overall in SEC play. They fell 26-14 in the Egg Bowl to Ole Miss on Friday afternoon. It was the first season under head coach Jeff Lebby.
“From a portal standpoint we’re going to address a ton of needs,” Lebby said postgame. “We’re going to need to do a really good job of going and getting the guys that we need to get. There’s going to be guys at every single position that need to come in here and make an impact.
“We’re looking to constantly upgrade. We want to make our roster as good as we possibly can and as fast as we possibly can. We have the ability to go do that.”
The Bulldogs now begin their offseason down in numbers in the receiving room.
