On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine: Mississippi State trending to flip 2024 QB Trey Petty
As Mississippi State adjusts to its new era under Zach Arnett, the Bulldogs are trying to build a competitive recruiting class in the 2024 cycle.
Entering the second week of October, Miss State’s class ranks No. 30 in the nation and No. 14 in the SEC, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking. In order to bolster that pledge list, Arnett and Co. may have to bust out the spatula for a couple of key flips.
One of the prospects that the Bulldogs might have in mind is right in their own backyard. On May 4, Starkville (Miss.) three-star quarterback Trey Petty committed to Illinois while holding offers from Miss State, Ole Miss, Indiana and others.
Now, he’s trending to flip to the hometown Bulldogs, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM). Maroon and White Daily’s Paul Jones logged an RPM pick in favor of Miss State pulling off the flip, accompanying it with an 85% confidence level, giving State a 91.6% chance to land its second QB pledge this cycle.
The 5-foot-11.5, 195-pounder has two documented trips with the Bulldogs back in 2022, but Jones is expecting the QB to make an official visit later this year. Offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay is leading Miss State’s recruitment of Petty.

Miss State’s class built by in-state commitments
While the Bulldogs’ class is well below average in the SEC, it’s still punching its weight thanks to a bevy of in-state pledges. Of the 16 commits, nine are from Mississippi, including the four highest-ranked members of the class.
Sardis North Panola four-star wide receiver JJ Harrell is the top-ranked commit, checking in as the No. 173 overall prospect and No. 28 WR in the cycle. Petty’s Starkville teammate, four-star WR Braylon Burnside, is the No. 3 pledge in the class and is a top-250 recruit and a top-50 wideout.
Petty would join Mobile (Ala.) Baker three-star Josh Flowers as QBs in Miss State’s class. Flowers is the No. 489 overall prospect and No. 29 signal-caller in the cycle. He committed to the Bulldogs on March 8 while also holding offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida and Texas A&M.
