WATCH: Mississippi State coach Mike Leach explains his love of cargo shorts
Mike Leach is national treasure – and everyone knows it. While he is undoubtedly the most unique college football coach in the country with his large personality and love of unique things, Leach has shared another one of his unordinary loves with the world.
In a video posted to his official Twitter account Friday, Leach – being interviewed by Mississippi State director of player personnel Brittany Thackery – shares his deep love of cargo shorts, which he has been wearing for as long as they’ve been a thing.
To begin the conversation, Thackery asks Leach when he first started wearing cargo shorts – and he proceeded to break down every single detail of his short-wearing throughout life.
“I tell ya, I started wearing cargo shorts shortly into coaching,” Leach said. “I’ve always liked the canvas first. The very first time I got into coaching, everybody was wearing those bike, double-net shorts that basically had waistband this thick – and they’re just terrible. They’re the worst shorts ever. They’ve gone on for decades. My whole time growing up that’s what our coaches would wear. It went on for decades. They’re terrible, they’re hot.”

While Leach made it clear that he’s not a fan of bike shorts that many coaches wear, he explained that he needs plenty of pocket space for everything he carries around with him – and that’s quite a bit of stuff.
“Cargo shorts came out, which meant extra pockets,” Leach said. “I actually liked a little shorter short than the cargo shorts because I mean some of these cargo shorts look like half a pair of pants. The pockets was the key. I like 100% cotton in the pockets. So, yeah, that’s what’s key to coaching shorts.”
With so many pockets on cargo shorts, what exactly does Leach put in them?
“First would be my wallet, my headphones and any change,” Leach said. “Then will be my script, my pen, sometimes sunglasses – depending on if I’m wearing them or I’m not. I’ll also put small lunch items in there – apples. You know, cargo starts … you can stick a sandwich in there. I’ve done that, too.”
For Leach, cargo shorts have changed his life for the better.
