Fresh off a 10-3 season and a 27-24 win over Iowa in the 2024 TransPerfect Music City Bowl, Missouri is expected to hire Miami linebacker analyst Sabbath Joseph as its assistant defensive line coach, 247Canes reported Wednesday night.

Joseph, a native of Miami, FL, had been with Miami for the past three seasons.

Joseph was a linebacker at USF from 2006-10, where he recorded 124 tackles, three sacks, one interception and seven pass breakups. He joined Mario Cristobal‘s staff in 2022, his first season after making the jump from Oregon.

With Joseph on the staff, Miami posted a 22-16 (12-12) record over three seasons with a 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the 2024 Pop-Tarts Bowl. The Hurricanes dominated in-state rival Florida on August 31, 2024 in the first meeting between the two programs in five years and had one linebacker selected in the NFL Draft (Francisco Mauigoa in 2025).

With the solid hire, Missouri continues its upwards trajectory as a program heading into the sixth season of the Eli Drinkwitz era. After three straight disappointing seasons to open his tenure as head coach, the Tigers have notched at least 10 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2013-14. With the College Football Playoff field expanding to 12 teams, Drinkwitz’s program is on the hunt to make its first ever appearance in the event.

In 2024, Missouri’s defense allowed 20.4 points per game (20th in SEC) and 317.5 points per game (17th in SEC). It returns a strong core of its top four leading tacklers from last season (linebacker Corey Flagg Jr, linebacker Triston Newson, safety Marvin Burks Jr and safety Daylan Carnell), as it had no players selected in the 2025 NFL Draft.

An anonymous SEC coach spoke highly of the program in Athlon Sports’ 2025 College Football Preview. “One of the most underrated coaching staffs in the entire country. If they can flip the QB and rework the offensive line and win another 10 games, Eli [Drinkwitz] should be on everyone’s short list.”

Joseph’s new team opens the 2025 season on August 28 against Central Arkansas. Missouri has an extremely favorable schedule, as eight of its 12 games this season will be played at home (including six straight to open the season).
