Former Missouri cornerback Chris Shearin will transfer to Connecticut for the 2022 season, he announced Monday evening via Twitter. A Virginia native, Shearin will be closer to home with the move from the transfer portal.

Shearin spent the past three seasons with the Tigers, though he played a minimal role. Across appearances in three games, he totaled just four tackles. Perhaps that is part of the reason why he decided to transfer, hoping to get more playing time at his next stop.

Shearin played high school ball at King’s Fork High School in Virginia before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season. A three-star recruit in the 2019 class, he was listed as the No. 141 cornerback and No. 1469 overall prospect according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. He chose the Tigers over offers from several ACC programs including Duke, NC State and Virginia.

He is set to join a Huskies team coming off of a 1-11 finish this past season. They ranked 123rd in the FBS in scoring defense (38.5 points allowed per game) as well as 105th against the pass. That should allow for plenty of room for Chris Shearin to move up the depth chart following his transfer, possibility even giving him the chance to start.

Turning Connecticut around in 2022 will certainly be no easy feat, as the Huskies went 0-10 against FBS opponents and saw their lone win from 2021 come against Yale. Over the past three seasons, UConn has gone just 4-32.

The Huskies hired a new coach this offseason in Jim Mora, who brings previous experience with the UCLA Bruins. Although there is hope he can get the program going in the right direction, it’s clear there is a long way to go. Both Mora and Shearin will make their debuts with UConn on Aug. 27 against Utah State.
