Brennan Armstrong goes in depth on the evolution of his relationship with Robert Anae
Brennan Armstrong and Robert Anae go back quite a bit and their relationship grew from Virginia to NC State.
Armstrong transferred from Virginia to NC State this offseason and Anae joined him after one year at Syracuse as the offensive coordinator. But the two worked together since Armstrong stepped foot on campus with the Cavaliers.
The Wolfpack quarterback went in depth about the evolution of his relationship with his coach.
“It’s pretty unique honestly,” Armstrong said. “I remember, freshman and sophomore year I didn’t really like him that much, you know? He really got on me and I was young. And then it started to transition to more of like just a relationship instead of I’m being told what to do and being yelled at.
“I took the feedback, took the coaching and it’s grown a lot. Now it’s funny because we just sit around and you know, we’ll do some offensive stuff, put game planning in for practices and things like that. And he talks to me like a coach, but just like a normal guy. ‘What do you think about this?’ So it’s come a long way from getting yelled at as a freshman and sophomore to him just asking me ‘what do I think about this’ and kind of just getting my input on things.”
Armstrong had his best season in 2021 when Anae was still the offensive coordinator at Virginia. He finished with 4,449 yards, 31 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 65.2% completion percentage.

In his career, Armstrong has 9,034 yards, 58 touchdowns, 35 interceptions and a 60.6% completion percentage.
Armstrong was also asked about playing within the ACC even after his transfer. He pretty much knows every squad on the schedule.
“Yeah, I think it’s an advantage,” he said. “I’m very familiar with this offense against matching up against their defenses, but I mean each game, you’re still going to game plan should. They’ll be doing something different, you know, there schematics might change just based off their personnel each year. You never know what happens.
“But in general you know, they keep it pretty similar from year to year, what they want to do defensively, but it’s cool, it’s a good thing for me to have under my belt.”
With Armstrong and Anae together again, they could certainly make some magic at NC State.
