Grayson McCall injury update: Positive update emerges on NC State QB's hospitalization
NC State quarterback Grayson McCall has been released from the hospital after suffering a scary injury in Saturday’s game against Wake Forest. McCall was carted off the field in the first quarter against the Demon Deacons as a result of taking a big hit.
At the time of his injury, McCall completed 3-of-5 passes for 42 yards and took a carry for nine yards. CJ Bailey came in to take over for him as NC State eventually fell to Wake Forest 34-30 in the final minutes of the game.
NC State was trailing 3-0 with 9:53 left in the first quarter when McCall – who transferred in from Coastal Carolina – attempted to scramble for a first down on third-and-11. Several Wake Forest defenders converged on him, and his helmet went flying as he was hit.
The commentators pointed out McCall’s history of head injuries as he was down. He also missed some earlier this season for a separate injury.
“Remember, this is a young man who has suffered a number of head injuries. Has actually had bleeding on the brain at different points in time in his career,” play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman said. “And this appears to be a very, very serious injury.”

NC State players were clearly upset and were praying for Grayson McCall as he stayed down on the field. His family came down to the field and was with him as he was loaded onto a cart and eventually taken off on a cart.
The game was paused for several minutes while McCall was down on the field. He was able to wave to the crowd as they cheered while he was taken off.
Report: NC State DE Red Hibbler plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal
NC State’s Red Hibbler plans to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel shared the report on the Wolfpack defensive end on Thursday morning.
“NC State defensive end Red Hibbler (@jykeveous) plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, his agents Adie von Gontard and Noah Reisenfeld of Young Money APAA Sports tell ESPN,” Thamel tweeted. “Hibbler led NC State in sacks last season with 6.5. He’ll have one year of eligibility remaining.”
Hibbler was no longer listed on NC State’s roster just over a week ago. A spokesperson then confirmed that he wasn’t part of the team anymore with no reasoning provided.
