During Big Noon Kickoff on Saturday, the panel broke down the opportunity that interim head coach Mickey Joseph has at Nebraska. As the panel detailed the huge chance Joseph has to prove himself as a head coach, Quinn also made a plea to Cornhusker fans to give patience for whoever the next head coach hire is.

Big Noon Kickoff on Mickey Joseph taking over

“Have patience,” said Quinn. “Whoever the next hire is, whether it’s Mickey Joseph who has an opportunity right now, or the next head coach — it took five years for Kirby Smart at Georgia to finally win a national championship and knock off Alabama. It took Jim Harbaugh seven years at Michigan to win the Big Ten and go to the College Football Playoff. It’s going to take time. Have patience with whoever the next head coach is.”

As Quinn highlighted, Joseph may not be able to completely instill his own system or way of running things in his interim role — despite the stated confidence in him by the program. Despite taking over Nebraska in the middle of a bad time, Joseph’s position as interim coach gives him an inside track to possibly winning the full-time job as Matt Leinart explained.

“A guy like Mickey Joseph … he’s an interim, right? He’s got an opportunity to take this job and be successful,” said Leinart. “But remember, he’s coming from LSU. He was with Coach Orgeron when they won a national championship a couple years ago. He understands that he was a part of a winning culture that had a foundation on knowing who they were. He’s also a hell of a recruiter. He recruited Jamarr Chase, Justin Jefferson — those guys to LSU. Now are they gonna get those type of players here? We’ll see, but he has that foundation. So I think Mickey Joseph’s got a heck of an opportunity today to galvanize this team.”

“He has an opportunity to really capture this crowd today,” closed Reggie Bush. “One thing I would love to see from Mickey Joseph is aggressive play-calling. Fourth-and-short, fourth-and-goal — we’re going for it. On the defensive side of the ball we’re blitzing, we’re getting after the quarterback, we’re getting pressure in the backfield. I think that’s a game-winning game plan.”
