South Dakota State transfer outfielder Cael Frost announced his commitment to Nebraska Tuesday. He was the Summit League Player of the Year this past season before entering the transfer portal.

Frost put together a huge junior year for the Jackrabbits, finishing with a .343 batting average to go with a school record 21 home runs and 59 RBI. He became the first SDSU player to win Summit League Player of the Year, and did so in his first year with the program after transferring from Kirkwood Community College.

Nebraska put together an impressive 2024 season en route to a Big Ten championship – the program’s first since 2005. The Cornhuskers finished with a 40-22 overall record and a 16-8 mark in conference play before heading to the Stillwater Regional in the NCAA Tournament.

After losing to Florida in the opening game, Nebraska got a victory over Niagara before again falling to the Gators in the double-elimination format. Despite the season-ending loss, Huskers coach Will Bolt praised his team’s performance throughout the year even though the final game didn’t go their way.

“We poured it all out there though,” Bolt said. “I have no regrets about this game. Obviously we weren’t on the right side of it but we competed our tails off the whole time we were out there. These guys did it together. They’re a championship ball club for a reason and its cause of their heart and toughness and they love each other. I’m very grateful for this 2024 team.”

Nebraska lost 3 players to the portal earlier this month

The transfer portal window officially opened June 3 for baseball and will close July 2. The addition of Cael Frost comes after three Nebraska players entered the portal when the window opened.

Robert OlsenBryce Hughes and Brooks Kneifl all entered the portal after helping the Cornhuskers to a Big Ten Tournament title.

All three players had a limited role on the team in 2024. Olsen is a pitcher who appeared in 13 games and recorded nine strikeouts across 8.1 innings. Hughes, an infielder, played in just 12 contests after redshirting in 2023, while Kniefl did not see any action this past year as a true freshman.

Olsen was a graduate transfer who spent the first three years of his college career at Brown, where he started 17 of the 28 games in which he appeared. As for Hughes, he arrived in Lincoln last season after playing three seasons at Alvin Community College (TX). He batted .324 and had 114 hits and 39 RBI during his junior college career.
