Casey Thompson details his confidence in wide receiver Trey Palmer
When Casey Thompson connects with Trey Palmer, Nebraska fans expect something special.
Palmer ranks No. 6 among Power Five wideouts in receiving yards on the season. Hauling in 40 receptions this season for 544 yards and three touchdowns, there’s no doubt who Thompson’s favorite target this season is.
“We just try to make plays when our number’s called,” Thompson said Tuesday. “Trey works hard, a lot of people see Trey with how fast he is, but what I see in Trey, he works hard on a daily basis. I told you guys earlier in the season that Trey and the rest of the receivers, and the coaches are pushing me to make every throw. We’ve just had a lot of reps. We’re getting better at practice. Our timing is getting better, our chemistry is better. Trey does a good job.”

Over 33 percent of Thompsons completions this season (40-of-118) have been caught by Palmer, and it’s by design. In conference play alone, the Nebraska standout has hauled in 20 receptions for 289 yards and two scores – more than the Cornhuskers’ second-highest receiver statistically, as Marcus Washington has caught 18 balls for 266 yards.

Whenever Palmer’s number is called, he thrives with the ball in his hands. With the game on the line, there’s no other Cornhusker that can be relied on more.
“When the fourth quarter starts, Trey always comes over to me and says, ‘if you need anybody to make a play, I’m going to make a play for you,'” Thompson said. “We’ve called on Trey two games in a row in the fourth quarter, and he made a play for us.”
Palmer’s number will surely be called on once against this weekend against Purdue on the road. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET live on Fox Sports.
