Casey Thompson and the Nebraska Cornhuskers had a bye week this past weekend, which meant he could take in some of the action going on around the college football landscape. However, there was one game in particular that had his attention, the Red River Showdown. Thompson, who transferred from Texas to Nebraska in the offseason, was the Longhorn starting quarterback in last year’s game and is all too familiar with the rivalry. Although he no longer plays for Texas, Thompson knew the Longhorns would be victorious on Saturday.
“I don’t know if Texas was favored or not, but I knew they would win the game because Oklahoma has been struggling recently. They got a good football team but 49-0; I don’t know if anybody was expecting that,” said Thompson. “So I was happy for the guys and talked to them after the game. I got to watch that live, which was cool. That was the first shutout in the history of the rivalry in a long time. I saw a stat that the last ten years or so have been one-possession games, and that one was 49-0. I was just stunned; crazy game for sure, but I’m happy for them.”
Thompson may not be a part of the Longhorns roster anymore, but he still has friends on the team. And although he could not lead Nebraska to a victory over Oklahoma earlier in the season, he is happy that his former teammates did so this past weekend. But as he said, hardly anyone expected such a lopsided victory for Texas.

Thompson on momentum for Cornhuskers
As far as momentum goes, individuals outside the program have been making some fuss about it. However, for Thompson, he is not too concerned with it and actually believes momentum is a farce.

“At this point in the season, it’s a long season, but momentum, I think, is more of an illusion,” said Thompson. “We talked about the process and taking it one day at a time is more important. We have a saying here: day by day. So, day by day, we want to get better and better until we can’t be beat.”
“That was our first time with our back against the wall; we were down in the second half, and we found a way to win. We’ve shown that we can do it. Everybody else sees it, we see it, and we know. So, inside the building, we have great confidence and great composture. And we’re just focusing on taking it one day at a time. Mickey is doing an incredible job, so we’re just going to continue to press on.”
